The Sale Is a Scam

If it’s always on sale, it’s never a deal

It’s a retail sales scam, a black Friday hoax. Why is everything on sale? There was a time I found myself between divorces, shacking up in a 4-bedroom house with a single guy who claimed I could stash my few worldly possessions anywhere there’s space. Sounded reasonable. I figured: he lives alone surely there are some empty cabinets or closets. Wrong! Every drawer, closet, pantry, and shelf was jammed full. The kitchen looked like a fallout bunker. Canned goods, rice, pasta you name it. And this guy never cooked. Ate out every day. Uber Eats had a dedicated lane for him. When I asked why he hoarded food he never used, he looked at me like I was the idiot. It was on sale, he said. And that’s when I knew…My days living with this moron were numbered.

The Retail Con

See, I know a thing or two about sales. I apprenticed as an assistant buyer at a major department store during college. That was my introduction to the retail black magic of loss leaders, spiffs, closeouts, and inventory dump tactics. The truth? Retailers don’t hold sales for you they hold them for them. Unsold winter inventory becomes a Spring Blowout. Last years TV model? Suddenly its a Black Friday Doorbuster. Old beach towels and mismatched patio cushions? Splash into Summer! Even Christmas has a clearance sale on December 26.

The Psychology of Savings

The entire concept of saving money by spending it is idiotic and retailers count on it. The average Joe doesn’t need another $80 blender, but its 40% off, so why not? Men use it to justify every garage-filling purchase: But honey… it was on sale! If your survival didn’t depend on it before the sale, it still doesn’t now.

The Stampede Mentality

Retailers love chaos. Black Friday? That’s just corporate Darwinism with shopping carts. We have seen people trampled to death trying to get $20 off an air fryer. Do you really think a flat-screen TV is worth body-checking a grandma in aisle 9?

Top 5 Tips to Avoid Retail Traps

  1. If it wasnt worth buying at full price, its not worth it at 30% off.
  2. Avoid impulse buys. Sleep on it.
  3. Know the true value of what youre buying.
  4. Dont buy just to save. Buy to use.
  5. Always ask: “Who benefits from this sale?”
