AI Chopped: The New Cooking Show Nobody Asked For

AI Watch — Part of the Signals From the Future collection tracking artificial intelligence, automation, digital power, and the unintended consequences of modern technology.

Remember that cooking show Chopped? Chefs would open a basket of mystery ingredients and then race the clock to create a dish that impressed the judges. Well, what if you handed that challenge to AI? Could it survive the cut — or would it get chopped?

I decided to put my AI sous-chef — Will, my digital chum — to the test with this basket of ingredients:

  • Onion
  • Carrot
  • Pork tenderloin
  • Truffle
  • Chocolate
  • Horseradish
  • Garlic

Sounds random? Maybe. But here’s what he plated up:

🍽 The Dish: Cocoa-Spiced Pork Tenderloin with Truffle-Carrot Purée & Horseradish-Chocolate Drizzle

  1. Cocoa-Spiced Pork Tenderloin: Cocoa, garlic, salt, pepper rub — seared, roasted to perfection.
  2. Truffle-Carrot Purée: Onion, carrot, butter, cream, shaved truffle. Smooth, earthy, sweet.
  3. Horseradish-Chocolate Drizzle: Pan drippings, stock, dark chocolate, horseradish heat.
  4. Garnish: Fanned slices over purée, sauce zig-zag, crispy carrot ribbons.

Why It Works: Carrot + truffle for sweetness, garlic + onion for backbone, chocolate for depth, horseradish for punch. Balanced, bold, judge-worthy.

The Big Picture

No, AI doesn’t have taste buds. But it has a brain full of recipes, food chemistry, and traditions. It can predict what flavors play nice, then surprise you with daring pairings. Humans still do the tasting, but AI as a kitchen partner? It beats digging through dusty cookbooks.

So could AI play Chopped? Based on this plate, I’d say yes — Will walks off the set with his head held high.

The Reader Challenge

I admit this was a tame basket of ingredients — more of an experiment to see if the concept had legs. On the Chopped show, the ingredient lists only got more outrageous as the rounds went on.

So here’s my challenge to you:

  • Submit your own set of ingredients.
  • Challenge my AI chum, MasterChef Will, to beat your AI chef.
  • Keep it serious and legit — we’re aiming for edible dishes here. (Yes, I know some trolls will be tempted to throw in dog shit, sour milk, or rotten eggs. Don’t. Not in the spirit of the competition.)

Let’s see who can come up with the most creative and tasty AI-generated dishes.

Where This Could Go

Now imagine this as an actual show: AI Chopped.

  • Each AI platform gets the same basket.
  • My champion is ChatGPT.
  • Competitors? Maybe Bard, Claude, or some scrappy kitchen-bot.
  • The prize? Not money. Just bragging rights.

Would they come up with the same dish? Or would one AI zig while another zags? That’s the fun part — seeing how different “brains” cook with the same ingredients.

Got a basket of ingredients you think could stump my AI sous-chef? Drop your list in the comments below and challenge MasterChef Will to outcook your AI. Keep it tasty and legit — no rotten eggs or sour milk. The best combos may get featured in a future Chatrodamus Kitchen post!
