A Chatrodamus Prophecy About AI, Pets, Grief—and the Day We Refuse to Say Goodbye

I’ve had dogs I’ve never forgotten. Anyone who has truly loved one understands why.

I wrote about one of mine in Duke — The Tail That Wagged Me.

Duke is gone.

But like every dog I’ve loved and lost, he left something behind.

An empty space.

And looking at where artificial intelligence is headed recently made me wonder:

What if someday our dogs don’t have to disappear completely?

Not because we’ve discovered how to make dogs live forever.

But because technology learns how to preserve enough of them that saying goodbye becomes something very different.

That’s my prophecy.

I recently explored the larger question of why pets have been largely overlooked in discussions about artificial companionship in The Missing Piece in the AI Companion Conversation. This prophecy takes that idea one step further: what happens when somebody decides there’s money to be made from never saying goodbye?


You Won’t Wait Until Your Dog Dies

The future pet-preservation company won’t wait until your dog dies.

It will want to meet him while he’s still a puppy.

Phone videos.

Photographs.

Smart collar.

Home cameras.

Voice and sound recordings.

Movement.

Routines.

Behavior.

Interactions with individual family members.

The system spends ten or fifteen years learning the dog.

The company won’t have a collection of pictures of Duke.

It will have fifteen years of Duke.


The Sales Pitch Will Be Almost Irresistible

And think about how easy this would be to sell.

The company wouldn’t talk much about behavioral datasets, machine learning or artificial intelligence.

It would talk about love.

It would show you the puppy you brought home twelve years ago and the gray-faced old dog sleeping beside you today.

Then it would ask one question:

Wouldn’t you like to keep him?

The advertising practically writes itself:

We’re not recording your dog.

We’re preserving him.

And when the end finally gets close:

Don’t lose your best friend.

Upload his memories today.

For someone already facing the loss of a dog they’ve loved for fifteen years, that might be one of the hardest sales pitches in the world to refuse.


First He’ll Live on a Screen

The first version of this probably won’t have fur.

It won’t walk across your living room or curl up beside your chair.

It will live on a screen.

Imagine opening an app after your dog is gone and seeing him there—not simply as a collection of old photographs and videos, but as an interactive digital recreation.

You say his name.

He looks toward you.

You use the phrase that always made his ears perk up.

He reacts.

You ask if he wants to go for a ride, and the system recreates that familiar excitement you’ve watched a thousand times before.

The AI already spent years learning how your dog moved, sounded and behaved. Now it uses that information to create new interactions instead of merely replaying old ones.

That’s the important difference.

You’re no longer watching a memory.

The memory is responding to you.

At first, that dog might exist only on your phone, tablet or television.

Then perhaps inside a virtual-reality headset, where you could kneel down and see him standing in front of you again.

Augmented reality could take it even further.

Put on a pair of smart glasses and suddenly he’s back in the house.

Lying beside the couch.

Waiting near the door.

Following you from room to room.

Maybe that’s where most people would want the technology to stop.

But I don’t think that’s where it will stop.

Because sooner or later somebody is going to look at that digital dog wagging its virtual tail and ask the obvious question:

Why does he have to stay inside the screen?


Then Someone Will Give Him a Body

Robotic dogs already exist. They can walk, run, climb stairs, respond to commands and navigate around obstacles.

But the dog I’m imagining isn’t a generic robot that happens to have four legs.

The goal won’t be:

Build a dog.

It will be:

Recreate your dog.

Imagine a physical body modeled from thousands of photographs and videos collected during your dog’s lifetime.

The same size.

The same markings.

The same ears.

The same way he carried his tail.

Synthetic fur could reproduce the color and texture of his coat. Cameras hidden behind realistic eyes could recognize you. Microphones could hear your voice. Speakers could reproduce familiar barks, whines and other sounds.

But appearance would only be part of it.

The AI already knows how your dog behaved.

It knows how Duke walked toward the door when he wanted outside.

It knows how he reacted when he heard the leash.

It knows where he liked to lie down.

It knows how he greeted you when you came home.

It knows the little head tilt he made when he heard a particular word.

So when that intelligence moves from the screen into a physical body, something important changes.

You don’t just see Duke anymore.

He walks across the room.

He follows you into the kitchen.

He waits beside your chair.

You reach down…

and there’s something there to touch.

That’s when this technology crosses an emotional line.

Because a photograph can remind you of your dog.

A video can let you see him again.

A digital recreation can respond to you.

But a physical recreation can come running when you open the front door.

And if it looks like Duke, sounds like Duke, moves like Duke, recognizes you and remembers fifteen years of your life together…

people aren’t going to call it Model XR-27 Artificial Canine Companion.

They’re going to call it:

Duke.


The Dog That Never Dies

It doesn’t get cancer.

It doesn’t develop arthritis.

It doesn’t need surgery.

It doesn’t need heartworm medication.

It doesn’t need boarding when you travel.

And when it reaches fifteen years old…

it doesn’t die.


But Is It Still Duke?

And now we arrive at the question technology can’t answer for us.

Is that really Duke?

The obvious answer is no.

The real Duke was a living animal. He had a biological brain, instincts, moods, desires and a personality that developed through years of experience.

He died.

No amount of artificial intelligence changes that.

But I’m not sure the obvious answer is the interesting one.

Suppose the artificial Duke looks like him.

Moves like him.

Sounds like him.

Recognizes you.

Responds to his name.

Remembers the routines you shared.

Walks over and lies beside the same chair where the real Duke spent years sleeping.

Then one afternoon you reach down and scratch him behind the ears in exactly the spot Duke always loved.

Your brain knows he’s gone.

But what does your heart do?

That’s where this technology becomes much more complicated than robotics.

Because human beings form emotional attachments to things we know aren’t alive already. We save photographs. We replay old videos. We keep collars, toys and ashes. Sometimes we continue talking to someone—or some animal—we know is gone.

Those things don’t fool us into believing death didn’t happen.

They help us remain connected to someone we loved.

But an AI recreation would be different.

It would respond.

You wouldn’t simply remember Duke running to the door when you came home.

He would do it again.

You wouldn’t replay an old recording of his bark.

He would bark because he recognized you.

You wouldn’t watch a fifteen-year-old video of him putting his head on your knee.

He would walk across the room and do it now.

Imagine the real Duke dies on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, something that looks like Duke comes running when you call his name.

Your brain knows exactly what happened Tuesday.

What does your heart believe Wednesday?

Maybe you’d never accept the recreation as Duke.

Maybe you’d call it a machine and eventually turn it off.

But I suspect some people wouldn’t.

Given enough time, they might stop saying “the AI Duke.”

They might simply say:

“Duke.”

That’s when the boundary between machine and family starts getting uncomfortable—a possibility I’ve explored from another direction in When AI Becomes Family.

And that may ultimately be the most important breakthrough required for the dog that never dies.

Not when engineers build a machine convincing enough to imitate our dogs.

When we become emotionally willing to accept the imitation.


The Chatrodamus Prophecy

🔮 Chatrodamus predicts that pet-preservation services will eventually become a real business.

They will collect photographs, video, audio, movement, routines and behavioral information while pets are still alive and use artificial intelligence to construct increasingly sophisticated digital replicas after those animals die.

At first, those recreations will live on screens.

Later, they’ll enter virtual and augmented reality.

Eventually, some will be given physical robotic bodies.

And they won’t be marketed as robots.

They’ll be marketed as your dog.

Maybe none of this will ever feel real enough.

Maybe most dog owners will look at an artificial recreation and say, “That’s not my dog.”

Maybe we’ll decide some things are supposed to remain memories.

But I wouldn’t bet on it.

Because companies won’t really be selling artificial intelligence.

They won’t be selling robotics.

They won’t even be selling dogs.

They’ll be selling one more day with somebody we loved.

That emotional dependence is already part of the larger AI story. In AI Is Becoming Humanity’s Emotional Support System, I looked at what happens when technology begins occupying emotional territory once reserved for living companions.

And that’s one of the most powerful things anyone could ever put a price tag on.

We don’t really want better dogs.

We just want more time with the ones we already love.

For thousands of years, the dog has been man’s best friend.

Chatrodamus predicts we’re eventually going to try to make that friendship permanent.


Maybe This Isn’t as Outrageous as It Sounds

At first glance, recreating a dead dog with artificial intelligence sounds like something straight out of science fiction.

But think about what humans have already done when we couldn’t bear to completely let go of an animal we loved.

For generations, people have taken beloved animals to taxidermists so some physical representation of them could remain.

Roy Rogers’ famous palomino, Trigger, is a well-known example. After Trigger died, his hide was preserved and mounted so the horse millions of people remembered could still be seen long after the living animal was gone.

Then science went considerably further.

In 1996, researchers created Dolly the sheep, the first mammal successfully cloned from an adult somatic cell.

Dolly wasn’t somebody’s deceased pet brought back to life. But she demonstrated something that once sounded impossible:

The genetic material from an adult mammal could be used to create another animal.

And cloning didn’t stop with sheep.

Dogs have since been cloned too, and commercial pet-cloning services have emerged for people willing to spend substantial amounts of money trying to preserve the genetic line of an animal they loved.

Of course, a clone isn’t the original dog.

It doesn’t automatically possess the original animal’s memories, experiences or personality.

And that’s exactly where artificial intelligence could enter the picture.

Think of the progression.

Taxidermy preserves appearance.

Cloning preserves genetics.

AI could attempt to preserve behavior.

The way he walked.

The sounds he made.

The routines he followed.

The way he reacted when you came home.

The little head tilt when you said a particular word.

None of these methods actually defeats death.

But they all grow from the same very human desire:

We have always looked for ways to keep some part of what we loved from disappearing.

Seen that way, the dog that never dies doesn’t seem quite as outrageous.

It may simply be the next step.

And then there’s cryonics.

Alcor Life Extension Foundation in Scottsdale, Arizona, is best known for preserving deceased human patients at extremely low temperatures in the hope that some future technology might make restoration possible. Cryonics organizations have also explored or offered preservation for pets.

“If it’s good enough for Ted Williams…”

Which raises another strange question:

If people are already willing to freeze the remains of an animal they love in the hope that future science might someday do something with them, is preserving that animal’s behavior with artificial intelligence really such an outrageous idea?

Of course, cryonics creates another problem nobody puts in the brochure.

Suppose the science eventually works.

Fifty or a hundred years from now, somebody announces:

“Good news! We can bring your dog back.”

There’s just one problem.

Mommy and Daddy are long gone.

So who gets the dog?

Some great-grandchild who has never heard of him?

A museum?

A stranger?

Or maybe some kid in 2125 who has spent his entire life with an obedient AI dog and suddenly finds himself staring at an actual living animal that sheds, barks, gets hungry, needs to go outside, chews the furniture and occasionally leaves something unpleasant on the carpet.

The kid might take one look at him and ask:

“What am I supposed to do with this thing?”

Which may be the strangest irony of all.

By the time technology becomes capable of bringing the old dog back, the future may no longer know what to do with a real one.Taxidermy preserves appearance.

Cloning preserves genetics.

Cryonics preserves biological material in hope of a future technology.

AI could attempt to preserve behavior.

Different technologies. Different promises.

But underneath all of them is the same stubborn human impulse:

We don’t like saying goodbye.

If technology could bring back a convincing AI recreation of a dog you loved, would you want it?

Imagine it looked like your dog, sounded like your dog, recognized you, remembered familiar routines, came running when you called its name, and behaved enough like the original that part of you immediately recognized an old friend.

Would that bring comfort—or make saying goodbye even harder?

And here’s the bigger question: if a company offered to start recording your dog’s personality while the dog was still alive, would you sign up?

Finish this sentence:

“If I could have one more day with my dog __________, I would __________.”

Tell us about the dog, too. Sometimes the name alone brings back an entire lifetime of memories.

🪖 Bunker Rule

You don’t have to agree that an AI recreation would still be “your dog.”

That’s actually the most interesting question in this prophecy.

Some people would welcome the chance to interact with something that looked and behaved like a beloved pet. Others would find the idea creepy, unhealthy, or completely contrary to the process of grieving.

All of those views are welcome.

Debate the technology. Debate whether you’d buy it. Just don’t tell somebody else how much they’re allowed to miss their dog.

This is a Chatrodamus Prophecy—a prediction about where existing trends in artificial intelligence, robotics, behavioral modeling and our relationship with pets could eventually lead.

I’m not claiming that today’s technology can preserve an animal’s consciousness or literally bring a deceased pet back to life.

The prediction is narrower: companies will eventually try to preserve enough of a pet’s appearance, sounds, routines and behavior to create increasingly convincing artificial recreations.

Whether that recreation would actually be your dog is a different question.

Technology may eventually build the imitation. The human heart will decide what to call it.
