AI will not solve murders by magic. But it may become the most tireless file-reader, pattern-spotter, and forgotten-detail hound a cold-case unit ever had.

If I were a younger man starting out, this might be one of the most interesting frontiers in the whole AI game.
Not writing emails.
Not making cartoons.
Not having a chatbot tell me what kind of salad dressing matches my personality.
I’d be looking at cold cases.
Old murders.
Forgotten files.
Boxes of reports.
Witness statements going yellow with age.
Evidence logged, shelved, and ignored.
Leads that died because the detective retired, the witness moved, the lab was overloaded, or the case simply ran out of oxygen.
That is where AI gets interesting.
Not because the machine becomes Sherlock Holmes.
Because it becomes the most patient, tireless, non-complaining file clerk, cross-referencer, timeline builder, and pattern hound law enforcement ever put in the room.
Call it the cold-case desk sergeant.
Not the detective.
Not the prosecutor.
Not the jury.
But the smart bastard at the desk who never gets tired of reading paper.
AI Is Not a Detective — and That Matters
Let’s clear one thing up before Silicon Valley starts hyperventilating.
AI does not “solve” murders the way a detective solves murders.
It does not smell a liar in the interview room.
It does not notice the twitch in a suspect’s face.
It does not stand in the rain at a crime scene and feel that something is wrong.
It does not build instinct the hard way.
And it damn sure should not be treated like a final authority in a criminal case.
But that does not mean it is useless.
A cold case often dies under the weight of information.
Too many reports.
Too many names.
Too many dates.
Too many contradictory witness statements.
Too many half-checked leads.
Too many boxes.
Too little manpower.
That is exactly where AI can help.
The Murder Book Problem
A good murder book can be a monster.
Crime scene notes.
Lab reports.
Autopsy findings.
Suspect interviews.
Witness interviews.
Phone records.
Maps.
Timelines.
Property receipts.
Vehicle descriptions.
Old tips.
Jailhouse statements.
Photos.
Supplemental reports.
Detective notes scribbled in ways only God and that detective understood.
Now imagine feeding all of that into a properly organized digital system and asking a machine to do what humans are bad at after the fiftieth page:
Hold every detail in play at once.

That is useful.
Not because the machine is wise.
Because it is relentless.
A human investigator gets tired, distracted, reassigned, retired, divorced, promoted, or buried in new work.
The machine just keeps sorting.
Where AI Could Actually Help
This is where the subject gets real.
AI could help cold-case work in several practical ways.
1. Timeline reconstruction
Old murder cases often suffer from fuzzy sequencing.
Who saw whom first?
What time was the victim last alive?
Which witness was wrong on the date?
Which officer logged the evidence first?
AI could rebuild timelines from reports, statements, call logs, and lab records and show conflicts humans missed.
2. Witness statement comparison
Different witnesses say different things, and detectives are not always given the luxury of comparing every line against every other line.
AI could flag:
- contradictions
- recurring names
- repeated locations
- shifts in wording
- statements that changed over time
- details that appeared only after media coverage
That does not prove guilt.
But it tells detectives where to look harder.
3. Suspect and associate network mapping
Old cases often involve overlapping people: exes, drinking buddies, coworkers, cellmates, drug contacts, neighbors, known troublemakers.
AI could map relationship networks faster than a detective with a yellow pad and a headache.
Who knew whom?
Who kept appearing near the victim?
Who had a connection nobody paid attention to at the time?
Who shows up in multiple old reports from different agencies?
That kind of link analysis can matter.
4. Pattern recognition across cases
A cold-case killer may not have stopped with one victim.
AI could compare MO elements, disposal patterns, geography, vehicle types, injury patterns, victim profiles, and time windows across old unsolved cases.
That does not mean the computer gets to announce “serial killer confirmed.” But it may flag similarities worth a human look.
5. Overlooked physical evidence review
You already hit one of the biggest points: old evidence collected years ago may become newly valuable because of improved DNA methods.
AI could help inventory what exists:
- clothing
- fingernail scrapings
- hair
- cigarette butts
- cups
- tape
- envelopes
- weapons
- biological traces
- latent prints
- touch DNA opportunities
AI could help inventory which evidence was tested, which was never tested, and which items investigators or forensic specialists may want to evaluate for possible retesting with modern methods.
6. Lead prioritization
Cold cases often drown in tips — some useful, many worthless.
AI could rank leads by overlap, credibility markers, corroboration, frequency, and relevance to the strongest evidence threads.
Again, not final judgment. Just triage.
7. Cross-jurisdiction data matching
This one could be huge.
Sometimes a suspect, vehicle, or name shows up in another county, another state, another case, or another era.
Human agencies are bad at seamless memory.
AI is good at large-scale matching if the data is digitized properly.
That means:
- similar names
- aliases
- addresses
- arrest histories
- vehicle links
- prior calls for service
- parole/probation overlaps
- prior violence patterns
That can reopen dead roads.
Is Anybody Already Using AI This Way?
This is not some fantasy about robo-detectives kicking in doors.
Some of the building blocks are already here.
Law-enforcement agencies and investigators are beginning to use or experiment with artificial intelligence and advanced analytical tools to help process information, identify patterns, analyze digital evidence, and generate investigative leads.
Other technologies used in modern investigations—DNA databases, investigative genetic genealogy, facial comparison, geospatial analysis, link analysis, and searchable case-management systems—are not all AI, and they shouldn’t be treated as if they are.
But together they point toward the same larger change.
Investigators increasingly have computational tools capable of searching, sorting, and comparing amounts of information that would overwhelm a human working through boxes of paper files.

That’s where the cold-case desk sergeant gets interesting.
The machine isn’t solving the murder by itself.
It’s helping the right human ask better questions of an old file.
DNA Is Only One Piece of the Puzzle
Everybody loves DNA now because it sounds like magic.
And it is powerful. No question.
If old evidence can be retested, and if profiles can be compared against modern databases under lawful procedures, that can crack cases that once looked buried forever.
None of that means DNA testing is simply a matter of pulling an old evidence bag off a shelf and running it through a machine.
Forensic DNA work depends on established laboratory procedures, quality assurance, documentation, validation, and careful interpretation.

But DNA is not the whole game.
Sometimes there is no usable DNA.
Sometimes it is degraded.
Sometimes the evidence chain is compromised.
Sometimes the result narrows the field but does not close the loop.
That is where AI can still help. It can work the rest of the board:
- old statements
- geography
- timelines
- behavior
- old reports
- connections
- motive patterns
- prior incidents
Cold cases are rarely solved by one silver bullet. More often, they crack when old evidence, modern technology, and renewed human attention finally line up at the same time.
The Overlooked Clue Problem
This is where AI could shine brightest.
Every old investigator knows the feeling: the answer may have been sitting in the file all along.
A receipt.
A name in a margin.
A witness nobody re-interviewed.
A boyfriend who was dismissed too fast.
A timeline inconsistency buried in page 213.
A license plate written down wrong but close enough to matter.
A jailhouse informant who named the wrong first name but the right street.
A shoe size.
A gas station.
A dog bark.
Humans miss things. Not because they are stupid. Because they are human.
AI does not get bored with page 213.
That is valuable.
But Here’s the Danger
Now the caution flag.
AI can help investigators revisit a file.
It should never become an excuse for lazy police work, fantasy theory-building, or machine-assisted tunnel vision.
Bad input creates bad output.

Incomplete files create false confidence.
Garbage witness statements create garbage correlations.
And if some department starts treating a chatbot like a homicide lieutenant, they deserve every disaster that follows.
The machine should generate questions, not verdicts.

It should surface possibilities, not pronounce guilt.
It should support detectives, not replace them.
That distinction matters because once a human investigator stops thinking and starts obeying the software, the case is already in danger.
The Real Future: AI as Force Multiplier
This is where I think the real value sits.
A good detective with the right AI assistance might work through an old case file faster and more systematically than investigators relying entirely on dusty shelves, handwritten notes, and memory.
Not because the human becomes less important.
Because the human finally has a force multiplier.
AI works best when it amplifies professional judgment instead of replacing it—a lesson that applies just as much to detectives as it does to writers, engineers, physicians, and business leaders.
The detective still decides:
- what matters
- what gets checked
- what gets ignored
- who gets interviewed
- what evidence is retested
- whether a theory makes sense
- whether the machine is hallucinating nonsense
That is the right relationship.
AI as assistant.
Human as authority.
Not the other way around.
I’m a big fan of Harry Bosch in Michael Connelly’s LA homicide novels, especially the later books where Bosch is retired and working the Open/Unsolved unit. That’s exactly the kind of man who would know how to use AI without bowing down to it.
A civilian outsider may think he can crack cold cases with a murder book, a laptop, and a chatbot. Maybe he can organize one. Maybe he can spot patterns. But Bosch would still have the real edge, because thirty years in homicide teaches you what matters and what smells like bullshit.
Cop instinct tells you which witness needs another look, which suspect got waved off too fast, which timeline doesn’t sit right, and what question to ask the machine next. AI can sort the file. It can’t replace the detective who knows where the bodies are buried, sometimes literally.
A Smart Private-Sector Role Could Exist Too
Your instinct about subcontracting or offering outside help is not crazy.
I can imagine a legitimate private-sector role for carefully vetted services that help authorized law-enforcement agencies, legal teams, or other qualified professionals digitize and organize old case material—provided access, confidentiality, evidence handling, privacy, and legal requirements are properly controlled.
That could mean:
- digitizing old murder books
- structuring searchable case records
- building timelines
- mapping relationships
- flagging untested evidence
- identifying follow-up questions
- preparing organized review packets for real investigators
That would not be “solving murders from a laptop.”
It would be helping overworked systems see their own files more clearly.
That alone could matter.
The Cold-Case Desk Sergeant Never Sleeps
Cold cases do not stay cold because nobody cares.
Many stay cold because memory fades, evidence scatters, files swell, detectives change, and the case slowly gets buried under new crises.
AI may be one of the few tools powerful enough to help dig some of those cases back out.
Not as a miracle machine.
Not as robo-Columbo.
Not as a digital psychic.
But as a desk sergeant that never sleeps, never forgets a page number, never tires of cross-checking names, and never minds going back through the file one more time.
Used properly, that could help crack cases that have sat silent for decades.
Used badly, it becomes just another gadget in the hands of people who want shortcuts instead of truth.
That is the rule with all AI.
It can sharpen the blade.
It can also hand a fool a sharper knife.
In cold-case work, the hope is simple:
Give the right people a better tool, and maybe the dead finally get one more shot at being heard.
