Every generation worried that new technology would change the way children grow up.

Television.

Video games.

The internet.

Smartphones.

Now a new question is quietly emerging:

What happens when children no longer have to struggle to think?

Artificial intelligence is becoming part of everyday childhood.

Students ask ChatGPT to explain homework.

AI tutors solve math problems.

Writing assistants help with essays.

Digital companions answer questions twenty-four hours a day.

For many young people, AI isn’t simply another piece of software.

It’s becoming another brain they can borrow.

That could become one of the most consequential changes in how children learn.


Every Generation Learns Differently

Children today are growing up surrounded by algorithmic systems and, increasingly, generative artificial intelligence.

Not just ChatGPT.

AI already recommends their videos.

Curates their social media feeds.

Suggests what they should watch next.

Helps them search for information.

Answers homework questions.

Corrects grammar.

Writes computer code.

Explains science.

Generates artwork.

Even offers emotional support when they feel lonely.

Unlike previous technologies, AI doesn’t simply provide information.

That represents a different kind of relationship with technology.


The Brain Grows Through Friction

Learning has never been a smooth process.

Children learn by struggling.

Read books they don’t fully understand.

Ask questions.

Make mistakes.

Try again.

Those moments give children opportunities to practice the mental skills learning requires.

Just as muscles grow stronger through resistance, the brain develops through mental effort.

The struggle isn’t a flaw in learning.

Artificial intelligence also offers enormous benefits.

A patient tutor who never gets tired.

A teacher who explains difficult concepts five different ways.

A study partner available at midnight.

For children who learn differently, AI can personalize lessons in ways traditional classrooms often cannot.

It can simplify complex ideas.

Adjust explanations to a student’s needs and level of understanding.

Provide immediate feedback.

Encourage curiosity.

Used wisely, AI may become one of the greatest educational tools ever created.

The danger isn’t the technology.

The Rise of Outsourced Thinking

Researchers use the term cognitive offloading to describe what happens when we rely on external tools instead of our own memory or reasoning.

Psychologists have studied this behavior as cognitive offloading—using actions or external tools to reduce the mental demands of a task.

Humans have always done this in one form or another, from writing something down to relying on digital devices. AI may simply give us a far more powerful place to offload some of that mental work. Read the research on cognitive offloading.

Think about phone numbers.

Most of us no longer memorize them.

We remember where to find them.

GPS changed navigation the same way.

Many of us have become accustomed to using digital directions even for trips we once might have navigated ourselves.

Artificial intelligence may take this one step further.

Instead of helping us remember information…

It may begin replacing the thinking process itself.

When every difficult question has an instant answer, the brain receives fewer opportunities to wrestle with uncertainty.

And uncertainty is often where understanding is built.


The Google Effect on Steroids

Psychologists have long observed something called the Google Effect.

When people know information is easy to find later, they are less likely to remember it.

This phenomenon was demonstrated in a 2011 study published in Science. Researchers found that when people expected information to remain available later, memory shifted toward remembering where the information could be found rather than necessarily retaining the information itself. The researchers described the internet as becoming a kind of external memory system. Read the original study.

Artificial intelligence amplifies that tendency.

Why memorize historical dates if AI always knows them?

Why learn grammar if AI rewrites every sentence?

Why practice writing if AI can produce an essay in seconds?

Over time, children may remember less information themselves because they know an external system remembers everything for them.

The brain quietly begins treating AI like an external hard drive.

Intelligence Isn’t Just Information

Knowing facts has never been the same as being intelligent.

Intelligence includes:

Those abilities develop through experience.

Not shortcuts.

Artificial intelligence can supply answers.

It cannot supply the mental growth that comes from discovering those answers yourself.

Knowledge isn’t simply stored in memory.

Much of it is built during the struggle to understand.


The First AI Generation

Today’s children may become the first generation to grow up with an intelligent assistant beside them almost every day.

For many tasks, AI will feel faster.

Smarter.

More accurate.

More patient.

The temptation to let it do the thinking will be enormous.

Creating a digital culture increasingly accustomed to immediate answers and constant stimulation.

That doesn’t necessarily make children less intelligent.

But it may reduce the number of opportunities they have to practice becoming more intelligent.

That distinction matters.


A Different Kind of Classroom

The classrooms of the future may ask a different question.

Not:

“Can this student find the answer?”

AI can already do that.

Instead:

Can this student think independently when AI isn’t available?

Ironically, artificial intelligence may make genuinely human thinking more valuable than ever.


A Prediction

I don’t believe artificial intelligence will make an entire generation less intelligent.

I do believe it will change how intelligence develops.

Children who use AI as a tutor may learn faster.

Children who use AI as a replacement for thinking may learn less deeply.

The difference will not be the technology.

It will be the habits.

Every answer AI gives a child without requiring thought can become one less opportunity for that child to wrestle with the problem independently.

Technology has always changed how humans learn.

Artificial intelligence may be the first technology capable of participating in the thinking process with us—answering, explaining, reasoning, writing, suggesting, and increasingly anticipating what comes next.

The question isn’t whether children will use that second brain.

They will.

The question is whether they’ll still learn how to use the first one without it.

Think about something you used to do entirely on your own.

Remember phone numbers. Find your way across town. Write a letter. Research a question. Work through a difficult problem.

Today, there’s probably a piece of technology willing to do at least part of that thinking for you.

And now AI can do much more than simply find the answer. It can explain it, organize it, rewrite it, and sometimes do the entire assignment.

So here’s the question:

At what point does using AI as a tool become using AI as a substitute for thinking?

And if you have children or grandchildren, would you rather see them struggle with a difficult problem for twenty minutes—or ask AI for the answer in twenty seconds?

Maybe the real challenge isn’t teaching the next generation how to use artificial intelligence.

Maybe it’s teaching them when not to use it.

This article isn’t arguing that artificial intelligence makes children less intelligent—or that using AI for education is inherently harmful.

AI may become one of the most powerful educational tools ever created. It can explain difficult concepts, provide immediate feedback, answer questions, encourage curiosity, and give students access to help whenever they need it.

The concern is what happens when assistance becomes substitution.

There is a difference between asking AI to explain a difficult problem and asking AI to do the thinking for you. The long-term effects of growing up with powerful generative AI are still being studied, and we should be careful not to pretend we already know exactly how this experiment ends.

The goal shouldn’t be to keep children away from AI. It should be to teach them how to use it without surrendering the mental effort, curiosity, judgment, and persistence that learning still requires.

Give a child the second brain. Just make sure they keep exercising the first one.
