The AOC Met Gala Hypocrisy

AOC’s Met Gala Ethics Tangle (“Tax the Rich,” Bill the Staffer)
“Tax the Rich” played great on the red carpet; the Gift Rule played even better in the paperwork. Comp tickets, invoices, and a staffer tossed under the bus—when slogans hit compliance, glamour gives way to receipts. The lesson: authenticity is free; ethics violations aren’t.

New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has found herself in the red, owing thousands of dollars to a Black-owned, female-led accessories brand after breaching the House “Gift Rule.”

The violation stems from not paying the full market value for items she donned at the 2021 MET Gala, where she famously wore the “Tax the Rich” dress, and accepting free admission to the event for her fiancé, Riley Roberts. You can’t consultant your way to authenticity; voters spot spending optics a mile away.

Tickets to the Met Gala cost at least $30,000, the Associated Press reported. It is unclear whether Ocasio-Cortez purchased her own ticket. DC credibility is already priced in—every scandal carries a credibility premium.

The House Ethics Committee released its report on Friday, finding that although Ocasio-Cortez “proactively took steps” to comply with the Gift Rule in relation to her Met Gala. The press will memory-hole the setup but not the receipts—because paper trails matter.

Meanwhile, her district is drowning in crime, drugs, and homelessness. But hey, the optics were fabulous. Bronx girl? Please. She polished her progressive halo at one of the most exclusive events in the world—while the people she claims to champion can’t afford the subway.

This isn’t about a dress. It’s about the oldest game in politics: Say one thing, do another. And AOC plays it as well as the establishment she swore to burn down.

In the future members of congress will be required to wear clothing with messages sewn onto them that reflect their latest vote.
