Before You Go (Philippines): A No-BS 10-Minute Prep Guide

A little prep saves a lot of heartburn. This is the quick, practical checklist I wish I had before my first trip: phones, money, docs, safety, and the small gear that keeps pickpockets and headaches away.

Before You Arrive (10-minute checklist)

  • Make 3 passport copies (color): 1 in your bag, 1 at home, 1 photo on your phone + cloud.
  • Bank alerts ON for every card; set daily spend/ATM limits; add a travel notice.
  • 2FA & recovery codes printed (bank + email). Store away from your phone.
  • Two numbers: primary SIM + backup eSIM/SIM. Know your carrier’s SIM-replacement steps.
  • Spare unlock method: passcode (not just Face/Touch ID). Turn on Find My / device-locator.
  • Scan & cloud-store: license, visa pages, insurance, prescriptions, tickets.
  • Install now: Grab (rides), Google Maps (download offline maps), your bank apps, authenticator.
  • Travel/evac insurance: file/PDF saved; hotline in your contacts.
  • Cash plan: small bills for daily use; two cards—one stays at home.
  • Emergency card in your wallet: name, local contact, blood type, meds/allergies.

What to Pack to Deter Pickpockets (and how to use it)

  • Cross-body sling worn in front; zip faces your chest.
  • Phone tether/wrist lanyard or a case with security strap.
  • Small carabiners to clip zipper pulls together on bags.
  • Flat money belt / neck pouch for passport + spare card (under your shirt).
  • Dummy wallet with a little cash + expired cards (hand it over if pressed).
  • Minimalist front-pocket wallet (front pocket matters more than RFID).
  • Thin cable lock to loop your bag to a chair leg in cafes.
  • AirTag/Tile hidden in your day bag.
  • Small LED light; compact umbrella (keeps hands free in rain).
  • Plain clothes, no flashy watch/jewelry; cap + closed-toe shoes = blend in.
  • Zip pouches inside your bag to avoid rummaging in public.

Phone & Money Setup (do this before wheels up)

  • Split risk: one debit + one credit; keep the backup card at home/base.
  • App logins tested on Wi-Fi + mobile data (so you’re not locked out abroad).
  • Local ride app (Grab) signed in; card added; pickup pinned to hotel.
  • Offline maps for your first city and airport area downloaded in Google Maps.

Documents & Ownership Reality

  • Foreigner can’t own land in the Philippines. If you’re thinking “house,” rent first and talk to a real attorney about legal structures for anything bigger. Don’t put property in someone else’s name because “we’re serious.”

First 24 Hours in Country

  • SIM: airport kiosk or big carrier store (Globe/Smart); test data before you leave.
  • ATM: use machines inside banks/malls; cover the PIN; pocket cash before turning around.
  • Rides: Grab over street hails; if taxi, meter on or hop out.
  • Hotel safe: passport stays; carry a copy + photo.

Street Habits that Prevent 90% of Problems

  • Step away from the curb to use your phone; two-up motorbikes do snatches.
  • Keep one earbud out; scan before you stop walking.
  • Cross-body bag forward; wallet in front pocket.
  • Don’t flash cash. Small bills in a quick pocket; the rest buried.

Red Flags (say “Not now”)

  • Urgent — send money now.”
  • “Trust me — paper later.”
  • Meter broken.”
  • “My family will handle the documents.”
  • “I love you” by day 3 + a sudden emergency.

If Something Goes Wrong

  1. Freeze cards & change passwords (bank, email, socials).
  2. Call your bank; dispute charges; get a case number.
  3. Police/barangay report for records/insurance.
  4. Replace SIM and lock/track devices.
  5. Tell your circle so they’re not targeted through you.

Bottom line

Most folks you’ll meet are good people. Prepare like a pessimist, travel like an optimist, and you’ll be fine.
